The partnership between KLM and Air France has been marked for years by constant tensions between the Netherlands and France: Paris wants to take control, while Amsterdam resists. The Dutch media have turned this conflict into a matter of national importance, especially since Air France secured the resignation of Pieter Elbers, KLM’s CEO. For three years, its profit margin has been declining. Ben Smith, the CEO of the holding company, stated that KLM’s margin needed to be improved, just days after increasing salaries by 3.25%. There are now fears of layoffs at KLM, given its disappointing results. Furthermore, Marjan Rintel, the CEO of the Dutch airline, is out of office in April, and her future remains uncertain. This uncertainty is a major concern in Amsterdam. Legally, the Parisian holding company exercises control over both airlines. But in the Netherlands, the merger is seen more as a partnership of equals. KLM fiercely defends its autonomy, which is unpopular in Paris. There are also fears that the group wants to merge its French subsidiary, Transavia, with its Dutch subsidiary, which currently operates completely independently.
