Aeromexico fears the negative consequences following El Mencho’s death

Andrés Conesa, the CEO of Aeromexico, expressed his deep concerns during a high-level meeting with Senate President Laura Itzel Castillo and Senators Alejandra Barrales and Cynthia López Castro.
The airline is facing a double crisis: on the one hand, the explosion of violence in Mexico following the death of « El Mencho »—leader of the Jalisco cartel—which has paralyzed domestic tourism, and on the other hand, the escalating war in Iran, which is jeopardizing transatlantic connections.
According to Senator Barrales, flight cancellations are piling up, severely impacting passenger traffic from the United States to Jalisco, as well as European travelers transiting through the strategic hubs of Madrid and Paris to reach Mexico.
In addition to these geopolitical factors, Mr. Conesa emphasized the urgent need for increased government support to restore fair competition with American carriers.
This structural imbalance persists because the drastic restrictions imposed under the Trump administration, limiting the opening of new routes by Mexican airlines to the United States, have still not been lifted.
In the absence of guaranteed reciprocity, Aeroméxico finds itself penalized in its most crucial market, struggling to maintain its profitability as operating costs soar and global demand wavers under the weight of security uncertainties at the start of 2026.
