Solomon Solenoid Kerzner founded the hotel chains Sun International and Southern Sun and then expanded his business empire abroad, building many more hotels, golf courses and other attractions.
In a statement paying tribute to him, Bahamian Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said he had left an indelible and lasting imprint on the Caribbean archipelago.
« It is with deep sadness that the Bahamas mourns the death of Sol Kerzner, who passed away today in his native South Africa, » said Dr Minnis. « He was the founder, president and CEO of Kerzner International, which for many years was the principal owner of the iconic Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island, Bahamas.
Kerzner is survived by his children Andrea, Beverley, Brandon and Chantal and ten grandchildren;
Sol Kerzner has now joined his eldest son, Howard « Butch » Kerzner, who passed away in 2006.
