Tourism in Peru: Three new itineraries in Machu Picchu

Walking to the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu is an experience that every traveller should experience in Peru. These trekking trails guarantee a cultural and natural adventure. However, the charm of this region is not limited to its most famous city.

Ausangate

The route is distinguished by the singular charm of its landscapes amidst lakes, thermal springs, valleys sheltering llamas and alpacas, wild vicuñas, canyons and snow-covered peaks. Ausangate is considered a sacred mountain because it is attributed the origin of water. Its inhabitants perform ritual ceremonies in its honour, such as the pago a la tierra (tribute to the land).

Depending on the access, you can also visit the mountain with its « seven colours », « rainbow » or Vinicunca, in the Vilcanota mountain range. Its particular pigmentation is linked to the presence of minerals and sedimentary stones.

Lares

It is one of the least known paths. And yet, it promises an unforgettable experience. This route, also known as the Weavers’ Circuit, begins in the Lares district, north of the city of Cuzco. There are other access points from the Sagrado valley of Urubamba. From the beginning of the hike, the Andean landscapes of the snow-covered peaks of Verónica, Sahuasiray, Pitusiray and el Chicón alternate with the archaeological remains and the peoples who speak Quechua. The route itself allows you to discover customs such as llama and alpaca breeding, tuber cultivation and, of course, textile production.

Saltankay

In Quechua, its name means « wild mountain ». The slopes of this snow-covered mountain are known for their technical difficulties that attract climbers from all over the world every year. But there is also a network of trekking trails nearby. The most famous hike, which lasts four days, can start in Limatambo, Mollepata or Soraypampa. Two impressive peaks, Humantay and Salkantay, dominate the landscape. This destination also offers the opportunity to admire the local fauna, from viscaches to alpacas and condors. It is an alternative route to the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
