Towards a paralysis of the US Department of Homeland Security ?

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is poised for another major budget shutdown due to the resounding failure of negotiations between Democrats and Republicans on immigration reform, a crisis exacerbated by the tragic events in Minneapolis.

While White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized the opposition on Fox News, denouncing « political and partisan reasons » behind this planned partial shutdown, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer countered that his The camp had been pushing for weeks for « common-sense reforms. »

The breaking point crystallizes the Democrats’ opposition to any new funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) until profound structural changes are imposed on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), whose methods are considered increasingly brutal.

The demands of Democratic lawmakers are clear: they are calling for an immediate end to mobile patrols, a strict ban on agents concealing their faces during interventions, and an absolute requirement to obtain a warrant before any arrest of a migrant.

This hostility toward ICE reached a point of no return after the tragic deaths last January in Minneapolis of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, two American citizens shot and killed by federal agents during operations that went wrong.

« Democrats will not give a blank check for chaos, » declared Chuck Schumer, supported by his counterpart in the House, Hakeem Jeffries, for whom taxpayer dollars should be used to improve the daily lives of Americans and not to « brutalize or kill them. »

In the absence of a last-minute compromise, this budget impasse threatens to furlough thousands of federal agents and suspend crucial surveillance missions, plunging the US administration once again into chronic instability against a backdrop of persistent racial and security tensions.
