Bad guy or cool guy

The debate surrounding Maximilien Robespierre is one of the most passionate in French history. More than two centuries after his death, and as conferences and new books continue to analyze his legacy at the beginning of 2026, it remains impossible to reduce him to a single label. Robespierre is a tragic figure, whose ideals of absolute virtue ultimately clashed with the harsh realities of political necessity.

The Incorruptible Defender of the People

Before being associated with the guillotine, Robespierre was first and foremost a humanist lawyer, deeply influenced by the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

As early as 1789, he advocated for universal suffrage, the abolition of slavery, and equal rights for Jews and actors.

Paradoxically, at the beginning of his career, he vehemently opposed the death penalty, believing that no human law should be able to take a life.

The Incorruptible: He earned this nickname by living an ascetic life, refusing bribes and luxuries, unlike other figures such as Danton.

He then embodied the hope of the poorest, the sans-culottes.

The « Monster »: The Architect of the Terror

For his detractors, Robespierre is the man who transformed the Republic into an execution machine, driven by ideological paranoia.

As an influential member of the Committee of Public Safety, he justified the use of violence to save the Revolution.

His famous phrase sums up his thinking: « Terror is nothing other than swift, severe, and inflexible justice; it is therefore an emanation of virtue. »

In 1794, he supported laws that abolished lawyers and witnesses in revolutionary trials, dramatically accelerating the pace of executions (more than 1,300 heads fell in Paris in six weeks).

By establishing the Cult of the Supreme Being, many saw in him a desire to become a mystical dictator.

Finally, his own allies, fearing they would be next on the list, had him arrested and guillotined on 9 Thermidor.
