Sun Siyam: A solar revolution in Maldivian hospitality

The Maldivian hotel group Sun Siyam has marked a historic turning point for sustainable tourism by inaugurating, at the end of December 2025, one of the largest private sector solar energy projects in the Maldives, a major initiative unveiled at an event at the Sun Siyam Olhuveli in the presence of national authorities.

This project, a central pillar of the « Sun Siyam Care » program, is not simply a technical installation but embodies a profound transition towards energy independence, aiming to protect the archipelago’s fragile ecosystem while responding to global climate emergencies through unprecedented technological innovation in the region.

Technical Performance and Environmental Benefits

Operationally, this hybrid infrastructure deployed at Siyam World and Sun Siyam Olhuveli by Sri Lankan technology partner Hayleys Fentons Ltd has a total capacity of 4,110 kWp for an annual production exceeding 6 million kWh of clean energy.

Thanks to sophisticated battery storage systems reaching 1,720 kWh at its largest sites and the use of real-time monitoring dashboards, the group is now saving over $1.29 million in diesel fuel annually and avoiding the emission of over 4,458 tons of CO2, providing energy offsetting of up to 17% for its flagship facilities.

A Vision for the Future of the Entire Luxury Hospitality Industry

Looking ahead to the end of the decade, Sun Siyam now aims to achieve 50% renewable energy by 2030, aligning itself with government carbon neutrality targets while strengthening the resilience of its infrastructure and the self-sufficiency of its local teams through cutting-edge technical training programs.

« By becoming a replicable sustainability model for the entire tourism industry, this massive solar deployment confirms that by 2026, hotel excellence and ecological responsibility have become inseparable to guarantee the sustainability of island destinations, » recalls Deepak Booneady, CEO of Sun Siyam Resorts.
