New developments regarding the hidden tomb of Alexander the Great

The search for the tomb of Alexander the Great remains one of the most fascinating and enduring archaeological mysteries in history. Here’s where we stand now.

The Tomb is still missing: Despite decades of intensive searching by archaeologists from around the world, the exact location of the burial site of Alexander the Great (who died in 323 BC in Babylon) has never been confirmed.

Alexandria, a privileged place: Historical sources indicate that his remains were finally transported to Alexandria (the city he founded in Egypt) by Ptolemy II around 280 BC.

There, they were reportedly placed in a magnificent mausoleum called the Soma.

However, traces of the Soma have been lost over the centuries, due to earthquakes and urban changes.

Location Hypotheses

The most widely accepted theory places it somewhere in the modern city of Alexandria, perhaps beneath the present-day Mosque of Nabi Daniel, but excavations in this highly urbanized area are extremely complex.

Other, less substantiated hypotheses suggest it could be in Memphis or even repatriated to Macedonia.

A Historical and Media Quest: The quest is so famous that it is the subject of numerous documentaries, comic books, and regular news reports.

The often-announced discovery of a statue or clues (such as excavations in Macedonia or the discovery of contemporary artifacts) periodically rekindles hope, but without leading to the tomb itself.

In short, the tomb of Alexander the Great remains lost, and its exact location is still a great secret waiting to be uncovered.
