Destination USA : Route 66 takes a break in Chicago

To celebrate the centennial of Route 66 in 2026, the city of Chicago has just taken a historic step by officially recognizing Navy Pier as the starting point of this legendary road, a decision that, according to Mayor Brandon Johnson, symbolizes the constant evolution of this route while honoring its deep roots.

This designation, approved by a resolution from Alderman Brendan Reilly and adopted by the city council, reinstates Chicago as the true eastern terminus of the route, thus creating a perfect symbolic link between the shores of Lake Michigan and the Pacific Ocean.

Historically, the western terminus was moved in 2009 to the Santa Monica Pier; With this new departure point located at Navy Pier, travelers will now be able to journey across America from one pier to the other, reinforcing the image of Route 66 as the ultimate road trip to dreams and endless possibilities.

The inauguration ceremony, scheduled for March 25, 2026, will include the installation of a monumental sign marking the beginning of the adventure, an initiative spearheaded by Marilynn Gardner, CEO of Navy Pier, who sees this location as the ideal gateway to celebrate a century of culture and exploration in the United States.

This day of festivities will coincide with another great American tradition, opening day of baseball season, thus uniting the city’s road heritage with the national sport in a unique and vibrant celebration.

At the heart of the celebrations, Harry Caray’s restaurant on Navy Pier will host the 28th annual Worldwide Harry Caray Toast, paying tribute to the Hall of Fame sports commentator and forever linking the spirit of Chicago to the history of the « Mother Road. »

By reaffirming its role as a historic cradle and modern gateway, Chicago ensures that the Route 66 centennial is not just a commemoration of the past, but the launch of a new chapter for the American adventure, where every mile traveled between the two coasts continues to re-enchant the social and cultural landscape of the country.
