Egyptian tourism is counting on the reopening of the legendary Cairo Museum

The Grand Egyptian Museum, located in Giza, Egypt, officially opened its doors on Saturday, November 1st. The official opening to the public is scheduled for tomorrow, November 4th, allowing visitors to discover the largest museum dedicated to a single civilization. It houses more than 100,000 artifacts from ancient Egypt, including the complete collection of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, comprising 5,398 pieces.

It is located approximately 1.5 kilometers from the Giza pyramids and covers an area of 490,000 square meters.

Its architectural design, by Heneghan Peng Architects, incorporates elements reflecting Pharaonic aesthetics, such as a large translucent wall 800 meters long that rises to a height of 40 meters in some places.

A Historic Inauguration

After more than two decades of work and numerous delays, this monumental project, which cost over a billion dollars, is now the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization, becoming the new global showcase for Egyptology.

Majestically situated at the foot of the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) aims to revitalize the country’s cultural tourism, a vital sector for the national economy.

The opening event was marked by a lavish and spectacular evening ceremony, featuring fireworks, ballets, and operas, in the presence of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and nearly 80 official delegations, including kings and heads of government.

Visitors will finally be able to admire more than 100,000 artifacts, including all 5,200 treasures of Tutankhamun, displayed together for the first time in a dedicated 7,000-square-meter space, as well as the colossal 11-meter-high statue of Ramses II, welcoming crowds in the main hall.

This opening is a 30-year dream come true, promising to make Cairo the new world center for Pharaonic studies.
