At the top of Kelimutu volcano, these 3 lakes each have a different color

Nature offers many surprises, here is further proof. At the summit of Mount Kelimutu in Moni on the island of Flores, three lakes, at the origin of the craters change color all the time.

From shades of blue, to a more brown water, travellers have the chance to admire in addition to a splendid landscape, these lakes with changing colors of Indonesia.
The Kelimutu lakes are truly magical. You can never guess what their colors will be a few months later! They can turn red, black or blue. Incredible, isn’t it?

Every lake has its story. The first takes the name Tiwu Ata Mbupu, it would represent the souls of the ancestors. The second, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai corresponds to the souls of the youngest, while the last Tiwu Ata Polo, of a dark color reflects evil spirits.

The scientific explanation

What intrigues scientists is that the colours of these lakes change periodically. The numerous scientific expeditions were sent to study this subject.
Where do these colour changes come from? How does it make lakes within the same crater look so different from each other?
A geochemical study collected data on mineral composition, temperature, pH and oxygen content in each lake.
Conclusion :
the three lakes are supplied by volcanic gas, but as a result of separate upsurface trips, volcanic gas supplies the lakes in different quantities.

To reach this volcano, however, you must be patient and climb a path of eight kilometres. An exceptional place to visit ideally in July and August during the dry season.
