Are the current actors in Hong Kong better than those in Beijing?

Historically, Hong Kong cinema, particularly during its golden age (1980s and 1990s), produced global stars like Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Maggie Cheung, known for their often more physical, expressive acting and their versatility in various genres ranging from kung fu to romantic drama and stylized crime films.

Conversely, Mainland (Beijing) cinema, associated with the Fifth Generation of directors, has fostered a more internalized, psychological style of acting, often focused on epic or historical narratives, producing actors like Ge You and actresses like Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li, whose talent is regularly praised at international festivals for its dramatic depth.

Today, with the increasing convergence of productions and Sino-Hong Kong co-productions, many actors move between the two systems, blurring the lines.

The appreciation therefore depends on whether one favours the energy and distinctive style of the Hong Kong school, or the gravity and psychological richness of the Mainland school.
