In Bohemia, immersed in the secrets of beer

Beer is more than just a drink – it is a real national treasure in the Czech Republic. As the world’s leading beer drinkers, the Czechs will obviously and in good faith affirm that Czech beer is the best in the world. Better not only in taste but also for health!

So much so that in recent years beer care has increased and « spas-bières » have opened in Prague as well as in the rest of the country.

Scientifically beer is attributed therapeutic properties related to the presence of mineral salts and B vitamins produced by yeasts during beer fermentation.

These vitamins are excellent for the skin, hair and immune system. This is not the first time that « food products » have been diverted from their primary purpose to be used for aesthetic or therapeutic purposes and after wine, honey or chocolate, beer extends the choice available to travellers who love spas.

The Czech Republic was already famous for its spa resorts such as Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) or Marianske Lazne (Marienbad) and the tradition of therapeutic hot tubs goes back several centuries.

Logically the Czechs had the good idea to combine their two traditions and offer baths combining thermal water and beer. Hop spas and local aromatic herbs are added according to the different « recipes ».

The mixture is heated between 36 and 40°, poured into large wooden or copper tanks where you can splash around alone or with others while sipping an essential glass of beer, this one very fresh!

The first Czech spa offering beer treatments was created in Bohemia in 2006 within a family brewery, the Chodovar Brewery.

Created near a spring in the 16th century, the brewery, which is still a family business, has since developed well. In addition to the brewery, there is now a restaurant, a hotel and therefore since 2006 a spa that uses locally brewed dark beer, hops and slightly effervescent spring water. For less than 28 euros you will have a 20-minute bath followed by 20 minutes of relaxation, all accompanied by two glasses of beer. www.chodovar.cz/id1001en-home.htm#

Pilsen is the Czech beer capital, where Pilsner beer still called Lager was created in the middle of the 19th century. This type of beer has become a reference and today Pilsner is produced all over the world.

The city had to equip itself with a beer spa worthy of it and it was done at the Purkmistr Brewery, one of the oldest in Pilsen. As everywhere « Business is business », so the brasserie opened a restaurant and a hotel to welcome its « curists ».

For less than 60 euros you can immerse yourself in a beautiful wooden bathtub containing a secret blend of Pilsner 12° blond beer with a small keg of beer at hand where you can drink as much as you want…. remembering that it also title 12°!

The bath is followed by a massage with beer and hop oil for perfect relaxation. http://www.purkmistr.cz/en/spa/baths/

Of course Prague is riding the wave of this new spa style whose success is growing. Several spas have opened in the old town with prices… Prague! But they will be perfect if you are in the Czech Republic just for a weekend in Prague. Now the intoxication is in the bath.
