When a dream cruise turns into a health alert: Caribbean Princess

What was supposed to be a sunny Caribbean getaway turned into a far less idyllic experience for several passengers on the Caribbean Princess. On Saturday, May 9, 2026, U.S. health authorities confirmed a significant norovirus outbreak aboard the Princess Cruises ship.
The vessel, which departed Fort Lauderdale on April 28 for a two-week cruise in the Eastern Caribbean, was carrying more than 3,100 passengers and approximately 1,100 crew members. According to initial figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 102 passengers and 13 crew members presented with symptoms typical of norovirus, including vomiting and severe diarrhea. Norovirus, often nicknamed « the vomiting virus, » is particularly feared on cruise ships. Highly contagious, it spreads easily in crowded, enclosed spaces: doorknobs, buffets, elevators, and restrooms quickly become hotspots for transmission. Even with strict protocols, cruise ships remain environments conducive to this type of outbreak. Faced with the situation, the company quickly reinforced its onboard health measures. Common areas were intensively disinfected, sick passengers were isolated, and samples were taken to precisely identify the strain of the virus. Princess Cruises maintains that the reported cases remain « limited » and mostly mild. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also launched a health investigation through its cruise ship monitoring program. The agency specifies that the Caribbean Princess will undergo a complete disinfection upon its scheduled return to Port Canaveral, Florida, on May 11. This incident serves as a reminder that, despite their image of carefree vacations, cruises remain particularly exposed to collective health risks. Since the beginning of 2026, several gastrointestinal incidents have already been reported on various cruise ships, making the sector a subject of heightened vigilance for U.S. health authorities. For the passengers of the Caribbean Princess, the memory of tropical beaches is therefore likely to be accompanied by another, much less pleasant one: that of a cruise disrupted by an epidemic in the middle of the sea.
