Hard hit by the repercussions of the migration crisis, the autonomous city of Ceuta is experiencing a historic collapse in tourism, marked by a sharp 90% drop in travel demand and direct economic losses exceeding €33 million.
The scale of the disaster is reflected in all local indicators: hotel occupancy has plummeted by 50%, travel agencies report a 37.5% decline in business, and the restaurant sector has seen revenues collapse by 50.7%, forcing nearly 91% of hospitality and dining establishments to cut their workforces.
Faced with this emergency situation and a faltering local economy, Agustín Almodóbar, the People’s Party (PP) spokesperson for tourism, has fiercely criticized the inaction and lack of engagement shown by the Minister of Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu.
Describing the central authorities’ total lack of response as « unacceptable »—given that he identifies this as the most severe tourism crisis currently affecting a Spanish destination—the PP is demanding an immediate support plan to rescue an economy that is being suffocated and left to fend for itself.
