They are overwhelmed and have now lost everything

Torrential rains of unprecedented intensity continue to ravage eastern Pakistan this Monday, July 27, 2026, turning vast swathes of the territory into veritable inland seas and forcing thousands of villagers to hastily abandon their homes in flimsy motorized boats.

According to the latest provisional figures released by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), these catastrophic floods and the resulting landslides have claimed the lives of at least 109 people since June 26; the majority of victims perished by drowning or when their waterlogged homes collapsed.

Punjab province—the country’s most populous region—accounts for nearly a third of the deaths and is bearing the brunt of the rising waters, particularly in the Muridke district, where many families remain completely cut off, without access to clean water, electricity, or food.

In the face of this emergency, teams of volunteer rescuers are working tirelessly across a dozen villages to evacuate those affected and attempt to save their few remaining possessions. Yet, the survivors’ ordeal continues even after reaching dry land: crammed into small, makeshift tents pitched along roadsides in stifling, humid heat, they face absolute material destitution.

This harrowing episode once again illustrates Pakistan’s tragic vulnerability to global climate change, which intensifies the severity of Asian monsoons in a country with very limited financial and structural resources to adapt its infrastructure to these recurring environmental emergencies.
