The SpaceX surprise: Starfall

Just a few days after its IPO, on Tuesday, June 23, at 12:52 PM (Paris time), SpaceX conducted the first test flight of its Starfall capsule. Liftoff took place from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a Falcon 9 rocket using booster B1078—a unit that had already seen service on numerous occasions.

The Starfall space capsule was launched from the SLC-40 pad in Florida aboard a Falcon 9 rocket on Tuesday, June 23, at 12:52 PM (Paris time).

In a departure from the norm, SpaceX provided almost no information about this launch, save for a single tweet. There was no live video feed of the liftoff or the return to Earth, no photos, and scant details regarding the payload—assuming there was one at all.

Rarely has Elon Musk been so tight-lipped about one of his new ventures.

Developed in strict secrecy, the Starfall space capsule was designed to return to Earth and bring back products manufactured in orbit, thereby paving the way for space-based manufacturing.

Starfall resembles a hockey puck, measuring 3.1 meters in diameter and 75 centimeters in height, with an empty weight of 2,100 kg. The capsule consists of a 1,400 kg aluminum top plate and a 700 kg carbon-fiber heat shield, with the shield distributed between the front and rear faces.

To orient this heat shield and correct its attitude during atmospheric reentry, Starfall uses cold-nitrogen thrusters.
Note that while this is sufficient to correct the attitude, it is by no means used to alter
the orbit.

The shield will be jettisoned before splashdown and then recovered—along with the capsule—by SpaceX teams.

Whether openly admitted or not, Elon Musk’s project is to create—or rather, to claim—a new concept: « produce in space and deliver to Earth. »

Indeed, certain materials can be produced in space under better conditions than on Earth—such as small-molecule or monoclonal antibody drugs, semiconductors, chips, protein crystals, and certain optical fibers—since the absence of gravity helps minimize defects like sedimentation or deformation. With this project, SpaceX will also enter into direct competition with existing companies in this niche—such as Atmos Space Cargo, Space Industries, Inversion, and Varda—that already utilize launch services for their own missions, primarily provided by SpaceX…

As a keen observer of the space industry notes: « In this area, with Starfall, Musk aims to replicate the strategy he implemented for Starlink: controlling the entire value chain, from launch to the final service. »

It is worth noting that Elon Musk is no longer keeping this under wraps; following the launch, SpaceX posted on X: « Today’s mission includes the demonstration of a new vehicle that will enable affordable, regular access to the microgravity environment for scientific research and in-orbit manufacturing. »

The secretive nature of this launch has sparked considerable discussion within the industry; however, despite widespread rumors, there is no official confirmation indicating that Starfall is intended for military use. As for the mysterious cargo carried by Starfall, it consisted of a payload of yeast and seeds loaded by Starbase Brewing to prepare the beverages of the future, as part of a project known as the Brewery Archive Space Exposure Demonstrator.

With Starfall, Elon Musk is undeniably consolidating his corporate galaxy and staking a claim in a rapidly emerging market—all while showing no hesitation in « squeezing » some of his clients.
