The revival of Thai Airways

While always regarded as safe and reliable, Thai Airways’ image had lost some of its luster compared to its heyday. It is now regaining its shine thanks to the efforts of the new leadership team—led by CEO Chai Eamsiri and the Board of Directors. Through the streamlining of its fleet and workforce, the introduction of new routes, and fleet modernization, the airline has returned to profitability.

Serge Rigal, the airline’s Sales Director for France, announced last week the relaunch of a daily Bangkok-Amsterdam route—operated by the A350—starting July 1st, following a 28-year hiatus.

He also discussed the state of the fleet following the « dark years »—a period that, particularly in France, led to the layoff of two-thirds of the staff.

Globally, numerous offices were closed, aircraft were sold, and a large number of employees were let go.

That is now in the past.

The airline has succeeded in repaying a significant portion of its debt and is back on the path to success.

Today, the airline operates a mixed fleet, reflecting a long-standing policy of neutrality between Boeing and Airbus.

Thai Airways is no longer a state-owned enterprise, though it remains the national carrier; it has returned to the stock market following a spectacular turnaround. Thai Airways is performing well, enabling it to renew its fleet both immediately and—even more significantly—in the near future (by 2027–28) with 32 fuel-efficient Airbus A320neos and 45 Boeing 777s.

Business Class has received special attention, featuring true lie-flat seats (with direct aisle access for every passenger) and a showcase of Thai products: unique cocktails from the Silpin brand, and elegant amenity kits, T-shirts, and trousers by Jim Thompson.

Economy Class seats on the Boeing 777 have been redesigned to offer slightly more legroom and a more comfortable 42 cm seat width; they are arranged in rows of three-by-three.

As for dining, Economy Class passengers will even enjoy the privilege of a Thai-style street food experience.

Baggage is included in all fares, and lounge access is standard for all Business Class passengers; furthermore, new cabin classes are planned for Thai Airways, most likely including a Premium Economy class.

These are great initiatives to ensure passengers smile more when flying with the national carrier of the « Land of Smiles. »
