The Canary Islands, a strategic retreat for cruise ships

The global luxury tourism landscape is undergoing a dramatic reconfiguration, propelling the Canary Islands to the forefront of travel destinations for winter 2026. Driven by geopolitical tensions in Iran and the closure of strategic shipping lanes such as the Strait of Hormuz, major cruise lines, in particular, have massively canceled their itineraries in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, repositioning their fleets toward the Spanish archipelago.

This unprecedented transfer of capacity reflects the need for absolute safety among passengers fleeing conflict zones.

Luigi Stefanelli, Vice President of International Sales at Costa Cruises, emphasizes the resilience of his business model: unlike fixed hotels, ships are mobile assets capable of moving to safe areas in record time.

With this in mind, Costa is replacing the Costa Pacifica with the colossal Costa Smeralda, a giant vessel with a capacity of 6,600 passengers that will offer weekly sailings including Madeira, thus doubling its capacity in the region.

This strategy of moving upmarket is shared by MSC Cruises, which will deploy the MSC Fantasia with its 4,300 berths, emphasizing exclusive services and private « Yacht Club »-style spaces to attract a discerning clientele.

Meanwhile, the German company TUI Cruises, after orchestrating the complex evacuation of its customers in Qatar, is redeploying its most modern ships to Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, offering extended itineraries to Morocco and Cape Verde.

This sudden boom is transforming the Canary Islands into the main alternative hub to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Gulf, absorbing a record supply of visitors into an archipelago which, although it already reached peak visitor numbers last year, is preparing to experience a historic winter season marked by safety and customer satisfaction.
