Six years to the day after the first case of Covid-19 appeared in Spain, the Canary Islands are once again plunged into a health crisis with the imminent arrival at the industrial port of Granadilla of a cruise ship affected by a deadly hantavirus outbreak.
The toll on board is already heavy, with three deaths reported and three emergency evacuations to mainland Europe, transforming this pleasure trip into a tragic ordeal.
Although the central government in Madrid is trying to reassure the public, stating that the operation poses no threat to public health or the archipelago’s vital tourism economy, tension is palpable between the state and the Canary Islands regional government, the latter angrily denouncing a complete lack of consultation and transparency regarding the actual risks.
The World Health Organization (WHO) was quick to clarify that hantavirus, while formidable, differs structurally from Covid-19, while closely monitoring this rare strain capable of human-to-human transmission.
The strategic choice of the port of Granadilla, isolated but close to Tenerife South International Airport, should allow for the rapid and safe evacuation of passengers without impacting the island’s major tourist flows.
This situation once again places the Canary Islands at the center of global attention, caught between the imperative of humanitarian aid and the protection of an economic ecosystem still bearing the scars of 2020.
