Spain approves Turkish Airlines’ strategic investment in Air Europa

The Spanish Council of Ministers has officially given the green light, formally approving Turkish Airlines’ acquisition of a minority stake of between 26% and 27% in Air Europa.
This decision, which follows a favorable opinion issued on May 19, 2026, by the Foreign Investment Council, validates a transaction worth €300 million for this company, considered highly strategic by Madrid.
To grant the necessary authorization for this non-EU investment, the government led by Pedro Sánchez imposed strict conditions to safeguard national sovereignty: the Spanish airline must maintain its defense commitments and contracts with the state, guaranteeing its missions of repatriating citizens abroad, deploying troops, and transporting military personnel without fail.
Although the Spanish political obstacle has been removed, the agreement is not yet finalized, as it now remains contingent on obtaining two crucial regulatory approvals from the European Commission, whose final verdict is expected by industry analysts between November and December.
