Southeast Asia in shock

Southeast Asia’s tourism industry and infrastructure are on high alert after a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Philippine island of Mindanao on Monday, June 8, 2026, shattering the momentum of a sector still reeling from the devastating Cebu earthquake eight months earlier.

Centered south of the major port city of General Santos, the cataclysm caused numerous buildings to collapse, killing at least 35 people, injuring 134, and leaving a dozen missing, while also triggering a series of powerful aftershocks reaching up to magnitude 6.5.

Faced with the immediate threat of tsunami waves, which have already flooded at least one coastal village in the Philippines, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the emergency deployment of rescue teams and the evacuation of residents to higher ground, while the shockwave spread regionally.

In neighboring Indonesia, although the tremors were strongly felt by residents and travelers in the city of Manado, the national disaster management agency reported only minor damage, while Palau and southern Japan experienced smaller waves, prompting the issuance of warnings, the precautionary closure of several Japanese beaches, and disruptions to maritime traffic.

Although the major beach resorts of the Indonesian archipelago have largely been spared, this disaster, combined with initial alerts issued as far away as Australia, casts a shadow of uncertainty over short-term tourism in the region, forcing airlines and tour operators to adapt their plans in light of safety concerns.
