Rising jet fuel costs and local taxes : Ryanair sharply scales back operations

Faced with soaring aviation fuel prices, low-cost carrier Ryanair is implementing drastic capacity cuts for the winter season, starting with an initial wave of cancellations and strategic frequency reductions designed to limit financial impact while maintaining a minimal network footprint.

While the carrier is prioritizing reduced flight frequencies on high-volume routes—particularly within its Italian domestic network and to its London Stansted hub, directly affecting airports such as Lamezia Terme, Treviso, and Bergamo—the strategy is more radical in France, where routes to the south are facing severe cutbacks.

Routes connecting London and Manchester to Carcassonne, as well as several lines serving Béziers, are being almost entirely suspended for the winter, with the exception of a brief period during the holiday season in December.

Beyond the cost of jet fuel, this decision to scale back services at French regional airports highlights the recurring tensions between the airline’s Irish management and secondary French airports; the company frequently criticizes high local fees and the heavy burden of state taxes that weigh on its operational profitability.
