Quebec invents a refrigerated cabinet in the middle of summer

The Office du tourisme de Québec (OTQ), in collaboration with the Ateliers du Carnaval de Québec, has created a unique way to bring winter to the heart of summer for our visitors to return during the winter season. Micro Climat(e), located near the Dufferin Terrace, offers a unique experience from July 3 to September 3, 2018.

Indeed, a 26 feet long by 9 feet wide container, refrigerated between -4 and -8 degrees Celsius, refitted into a real winter « box », gives tourists the chance to get a glimpse of the exoticism of our Quebec winter season: ice sculptures, ice hotel in a minimized version, ski chairlift, Quebec scenery as well as video projections of our winter essentials.

The idea of this infrastructure was born two years ago in order to promote the uniqueness of our winters and to make our summer tourists live, for a few moments, the climate and winter scenery. The objective is to increase tourist traffic during the winter season.

« The winter tourism potential is there and it is our duty, as an international destination, to innovate and encourage foreign tourists to visit us during the cold season, » said Régis Labeaume, Mayor of Québec City.

« As one of the objectives of our 2017-2021 Destination Plan is to increase the number of tourists by 15 % during the winter period, it goes without saying that we must align our actions and be bold in our way of promoting the destination and maximizing our influence in other ways, » exclaimed Andrée Gauthier, President of the Office du tourisme de Québec.

This new structure, which is open from noon to 9 p.m., 7 days a week, throughout the summer, is located near the Dufferin Terrace between Samuel de Champlain’s monument and the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac. This enchanting site is very busy, offering a unique view of the St. Lawrence River. This is the place to maximize the success of this initiative.
