Kyushu, the death toll rises again

Two days after the violent 7.1-magnitude earthquake that devastated the island of Kyushu in southwestern Japan, authorities now fear the death toll could reach at least 23; the Kumamoto disaster management office has confirmed 17 deaths and reported six other individuals found without vital signs, in addition to five people in critical condition.

At the heart of the rescue efforts, the Aeon shopping mall in Kashima has become a focal point of anxiety: hundreds of rescuers are working tirelessly amidst the ruins of the building—which was shattered by a massive blast attributed to a gas leak following the quake—managing to pull out ten people, four of whom were dead and one in cardiac arrest.

The entire region is reeling from colossal physical destruction—collapsed houses, cracked bridges, multiple fires, and widespread failures of water and electricity networks—while relentless aftershocks hamper rescue operations.

The ordeal of the thousands of people left homeless and without essential services is further compounded by grueling weather conditions; the country is facing extreme summer temperatures exceeding 35°C, prompting the meteorological agency to issue emergency heatstroke warnings to protect a population already on the verge of exhaustion.
