How Moroccan tourism is courting GNV connections

The shipping company GNV, a subsidiary of the MSC Group, has just reached a major technological and environmental milestone by deploying its two flagship vessels, the GNV Aurora and the GNV Virgo, on its strategic routes connecting Morocco to Europe.

Celebrated at the official christening of the GNV Aurora in the port of Tangier Med, this large-scale deployment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered vessels—designed to eventually incorporate bioLNG or synthetic LNG—illustrates the shipping company’s commitment to accelerating its eco-responsible transition while strengthening its presence in North Africa.

Building on a long-standing presence of nearly twenty years, having transported 6 million passengers, including 465,000 in 2025 alone, GNV is positioning these latest-generation vessels between Tanger Med, Barcelona—a major Iberian logistics hub—and Genoa, the Italian port that will provide fuel for the tanks every 4 to 5 days.

This restructuring of services comes at an opportune time for summer 2026, facilitating the massive transit of Operation Marhaba, which orchestrates the summer return of more than three million Moroccans residing in Europe, while also boosting the flow of industrial goods through the Tangier Med hub, now an essential component of Euro-Mediterranean value chains.

This long-term industrial vision also revolves around the major challenges of the decade, notably the prospect of the 2030 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal—a historic global event that will dramatically increase the demand for intercontinental mobility and for which GNV is already establishing itself as a leading player.
