The Thai government has gone on high alert to protect its borders against the spread of serious infectious diseases. Thailand officially imposed a strict 21-day mandatory quarantine on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, targeting all individuals traveling directly from or having transited through the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) or Uganda, two Central African nations currently experiencing a deadly resurgence of the Ebola virus.
Eastern DRC has once again emerged as the critical epicenter of a large-scale epidemic, an alarming health situation that immediately triggered an international health alert from the World Health Organization (WHO).
Since the Kinshasa government officially declared an epidemic on May 15, the viral disease has already caused 204 deaths and led to 867 suspected cases, according to an official epidemiological report released this weekend by the DRC Ministry of Health.
In neighboring Uganda, the situation is also escalating, with the first death recorded and six other cases of infection already confirmed by the Kampala authorities.
Faced with this biological threat, the Thai Ministry of Public Health stipulated in an official statement released this Tuesday that all travelers arriving from these areas, whether or not they present clinical symptoms of Ebola virus infection, must undergo isolation for at least 21 days, a duration scientifically corresponding to the maximum incubation period of the pathogen.
As a reminder, Ebola virus disease is an acute and frequently fatal viral infection in humans, characterized by highly contagious transmission through direct contact with the bodily fluids, blood, or secretions of infected individuals, and which can cause severe hemorrhagic fevers and rapid multiple organ failure.
While Thailand has not yet reported any confirmed cases of travelers infected with the Ebola virus within its borders, the Ministry of Public Health, through its top official Somlerk Jeungsmarn, emphasizes that there is a very real and ongoing risk of importation due to the sharp increase in population movements and global tourism.
In detailing the logistical aspects of the health protocol, the authorities specified that individuals arriving at the borders and exhibiting symptoms suggestive of Ebola will be immediately treated and isolated in a specifically designated public hospital, while asymptomatic travelers will be required to undergo mandatory monitoring in a dedicated state quarantine center, thus protecting the kingdom from the risk of community transmission.
