Australia : Massive invasion of long-spined sea urchins threatens

Australia is facing an unprecedented marine biodiversity crisis as millions of long-spined sea urchins (Centrostephanus rodgersii), an invasive and particularly harmful species, are proliferating uncontrollably from New South Wales to Victoria and Tasmania.
This population explosion, fueled by warming ocean currents, is transforming lush kelp forests into arid « sea urchin deserts, » threatening the balance of the entire coastal ecosystem and local fisheries.
Faced with this emergency, local authorities and scientists are making urgent appeals for increased federal funding to support large-scale eradication programs.
As part of a pilot intervention plan in Tasmania, professional divers have already successfully removed more than eight million sea urchins by hand from coral and rocky reefs, but the recent discovery of specimens in western Tasmania, an area previously unaffected, confirms an alarming geographical expansion.
This southward migration is seen by experts as a direct consequence of the strengthening East Australian Current, which carries sea urchin larvae to waters that were once too cold for their survival.
Without a coordinated and massive national intervention by 2026, the destruction of marine habitats could become irreversible, leading to the extinction of many endemic fish and crustacean species that depend on the protection of seaweed for reproduction.
Combating this voracious predator is now a top priority for the preservation of Australia’s underwater natural heritage.
